Charlie continued his good form of late by taking pole position in tonight’s F1 qulaifying. Three heats in the 36s gave him a 2 lane total of 73.44. Woody wasn’t far behind, posting a 37 and a 35 to total 72.51 and take him into the A final. Bob was back to somewhere near his best and his total of 71.86 was good enough for the B final along with Mick, half a lap back on 71.27. Further back, Brian was having a wretched time and could only manage 7th spot and a D final place along with Trev, Kevin and Roger who was also having a bad time with gear problems.

So the D final kicked off and Brian gambled by picking Yellow lane as his first choice. It paid off, though, as he lead the race from the outset. Trev had a slow start and was some way back but a late surge saw him catching Brian hand over fist as Brian eased back. He very nearly caught Brian, only just missing out on the win by 2 parts. Kevin found the grip on Red a bit erratic and couldn’t get on the pace and took third, with Roger’s night ending early with no gears left.

Brian and Trev joined Kev and Chris for the C final and this time Brian chose Blue over Yellow. Kev established an early lead with Brian chasing. Kev looked comfortable for the win until a late off and a bit of slow marshalling gave Brian his chance and he snatched the lead and the win. Trev couldn’t find his earlier pace and took third ahead of an ‘out of sorts’ Chris in fourth.

In the B final Brian reverted back to Yellow and lined up with Bob, Mick and Kev. Brian had suddenly found some speed from somewhere in the finals and again took the win, this time beating Bob into second by half a lap. Kev didn’t have a good run on Blue but took third from Mick , who couldn’t match his qualifying pace, in fourth.

So the A final was Charlie, Woody, Bob and Brian (certainly getting his money’s worth tonight). Woody had a great start with the others tripping over themselves on the first lap and established a 3 second lead. After sorting themselves out Charlie emerged in second just ahead of Bob and Brian slipping back in fourth. Woody continued on his merry way until lap 8, when an off saw Charlie catch up to within a second. This is where the race really started. It was clear that Woody was struggling through the ‘esses’ on Red and Charlie caught up to within a few tenths. The next few laps stayed like this with Woody visibly quicker everywhere except the esses. Charlie kept closing up there but couldn’t get past but eventually Woody dropped it on lap 16, and two more bad laps had Charlie ahead by a good half a lap. From then on it was a question of who would drop it next, Charlie had established the best part of lap’s lead and was driving very consistently until he had an off on lap 31. He didn’t lose too much time, though, and kept ahead of Woody to take the win in an excellent race by 38 parts. All this time Bob was patiently waiting for a major incident at the front, ready to pounce, but it didn’t happen and he was always just behind the battle up front. Charlie finished with 35.76 to Woody’s 35.38 and Bob on exactly 35.00. Brian had long since given up his challenge and his epic drive through the field finally ended with virtual retirement on 28 laps.
