Another big turnout of 14 drivers for tonight’s 1/24th Sports, the last of 2011. In qualy, Woody was the one to set the pace with a 1 minute total of 14.50. Mick was the only other driver to break 14 laps with a 14.35. Third spot went to John Gooding with 13.86 and fourth was Christopher with 13.82. Two newcomers tonight, visiting RC racers Ben (from Rugby) and Maikel (from Holland) both never having driven a slot car before but putting in creditable performances with 10 laps +. Maikel is a current RC World Champion, so does now how to race !

The C and B finals were 5-man affairs and first up were Corky, Roger, Maikel, Geoff and Ben. After a lowly qualifying place (because of an off) Corky then had the misfortune to break his car (motor out) in the third segment after doing a couple of 39s. The race turned out to be a good one between Roger and Geoff. Going into the last segment Roger had a 3 lap lead on Geoff but a poor run from Roger on Yellow and a storming drive from Geoff on White saw Geoff (148.27) pip Roger (148.26) for the win by just 1 part (foot) !! Meanwhile Maikel and Ben were coming to terms with their first racing experience and were pretty evenly matched, finishing up only a couple of laps apart, Maikel with 126.60 to Ben’s 124.06.

Chris, Kevin, Kev, Charlie and Gavin then lined up for the B final. At halfway, Charlie lead the way but Gavin and Chris were hot on his heels and Kevin only a couple of laps back. Kevin then put in a storming 43 on White to pull himself up into second, behind leader Gavin with Charlie and Chris slipping back a bit.Into the last and Gav consolidated his lead with a 42 and Kevin also did a 42 to cement second place. Gavin’s winning total was a stiff 180.89 and Kevin did 179.06. With Charlie’s car losing speed he just did enough in the last to hang on to third place with 177.92, beating Chris’s 177.80 by 12 parts.

On to the A and Woody and Mick lined up with John and Christopher - Experience versus youth !! Woody and Mick were quick to stamp their authority over the young ‘whippersnappers’, both doing 42s in the first to 40s from the youngsters. They continued at a very quick pace, matching each other all the way often only a couple of feet apart for long periods. Going into the last it looked very much like their respective qualy totals would prove the difference, with Woody just ahead on the track. Disaster then for Woody on lap 26, a big off saw him lose a lap and a half to Mick, and with Mick driving the perfect leg he ran out a comfortable(ish) winner in the end in a great race. Mick finished up on 183.61 (less than a lap off the record) to Woody’s 182.19, both beating Gavin’s total from the B. John and Christopher couldn’t match the frontrunners’ pace but had a good battle between them, John eventually beating Christopher by a lap and a half.

So, a last win of the year for Mick from Woody in second. Gavin finished up third overall and Kevin (getting quicker by the week) took an excellent fourth overall.

In the Championship, Charlie had an unassailable lead going into tonight and so ended up as the winner of the Autumn Championship. Mick took second place with a good consistent set of results and Chris  had to settle for third place, just 4 points behind Mick.

A New Year and a new season start next week with 1/32nd Sports. Let’s look forward to many more close racing nights.
